    Albert:

We really are thrilled that we could all come together for such a good cause - we’ve got a fantastic crowd here!! I see influencers, actors, musicians, and even some superheroes. Who do you spot Trisha?

    [GFX: BoxLunch Holiday Gala graphic]

    Trisha:

Coming to a theater near you, or maybe already in a theater near you, I spot Juju Green AKA Straw Hat Goofy! Juju, I don’t know if you review parties in addition to movies, but if so, please be kind!

    Trisha [CONT.]

We promised you a MARVEL-ous evening…and we always try to live up to expectations. They haven’t yet met in the “official” multiverse, but tonight, we’ve got both Shang-Chi and America Chavez here! Give it up for Xochitl [“So-chee”] Gomez and Simu Liu! [“SEE-moo LEE-ew”].

    Albert:

They’re not the only members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe we have joining us tonight! Ms. Marvel quickly became a fan favorite series when it launched earlier this year - and we’ve got cast members Anjali Bhimani [aan·juh·lee buh·maa·nee] and Yasmeen Fletcher - where are you??? If you need a kick ass auntie or friend to support you, these are the two ladies you want by your side.

    Trisha:

I also want to give a shout out to Emma Caulfield Ford, who played fan favorite “Dottie” in WandaVision and “Anya” on Buffy the Vampire Slayer - between witches, vampires, and hexes, she knows her way around the dark side. But tonight, it’s all light and joy as we celebrate the work of BoxLunch!

    Albert:

And speaking of joy - Sam Richardson, where are ya? This fantastic comedic actor has made us laugh in everything from Hocus Pocus 2 to Ted Lasso to VEEP, and we’re so glad he’s going to help us recognize some of the folks doing amazing work in our community tonight.

    Trisha:

Also helping us spread the love for those who are trying to COMBAT hunger and food insecurity - we’ve got Mortal Kombat’s Lewis Tan!! See what I did there… “combat”...sorry - couldn’t resist!

I also want to take a minute to recognize the BoxLunch Collective. Where are our Collective members? (Acknowledge audience)

A special thanks to all of you for helping spread the word of BoxLunch and our mission with Feeding America.

    Albert:

And now, let’s give a special shout out to our Feeding America guests here tonight! Thanks for being such incredible partners with BoxLunch in the work you do together to help end hunger.

HOSTS - INTRO SIZZLE - ALBERT + TRISHA [1:00] (CONT)

    Trisha:

Now, most, if not all, of you know what BoxLunch is about. It’s the place to get your fandom favorites on a sweater, as a figure, on a notebook…personally, I’m partial to the (ramen bowls / keychains / bucket hats / insert your fave item), but it’s much more than just that. For the new members of the BoxLunch family, here’s a little something to get you up to speed.

    VIDEO: BoxLunch SIZZLE [1:15]

    HOSTS - NAPKINS/FEEDING AMERICA: ALBERT + TRISHA [2:00]

    Trisha:

Fandom, philanthropy, and fun - that is what BoxLunch is all about! While we’re getting into the holiday spirit, though, we do want you to also keep in mind the reason why we are here tonight.

If you look at your place settings, some of you have an orange napkin. FYI, the chances of you getting an orange napkin are 1 in 10. If you have one of these orange napkins, can you please stand up?

    [GFX: FA – 1 in 10 graphic]

    Albert:

1 in 10 people across the country struggles with food insecurity. The holidays can be tough for many, especially for our neighbors facing hunger. We are here for the 1 in 10 who might not know where their next meal is coming from. We’re here to try to make it a little easier, one meal at a time.

Thanks, everyone who stood up for helping to demonstrate just how widespread food insecurity is. You may now take your seats.

    Trisha:

BoxLunch is dedicated to helping to alleviate hunger year-round, not just during the holiday season. In fact, it’s actually part of BoxLunch’s origin story - the company was founded with the specific mission of giving back to local communities to help end hunger in the U.S. Every $10 spent at BoxLunch either in-store or online helps to provide a meal to a person in need - it’s baked right into the brand’s reason for being.

    Albert:

And tonight, you get to be a part of that! As we head into the rest of the evening, please keep the reason for tonight in mind, and keep posting with the hashtag #BoxLunchHolidayGala. Now please enjoy your dinner and some holiday tunes from Perry O’Neal, and we’ll be back in a little bit!

It’s a huge pleasure to introduce tonight’s featured performer. He’s danced and sung his way all around the world in shows like “SOMETHING ROTTEN,” “THE BOOK OF MORMON,” “MAMMA MIA,” “HAIR,” and “FOSSE.” But perhaps he’s best known for his award-winning role as the Genie in Disney’s stage musical “ALADDIN.”

What a performance, let’s hear it again for Michael James Scott! (encourage audience applause)

It’s gonna be hard to follow that, but I gotta try though!

I’d like to take a minute to talk about philanthropy. As we mentioned earlier, fans' collective purchasing power is helping to provide millions of meals to neighbors in need across the country. Purchases made at BoxLunch stores benefit food banks in the area that they were purchased. So far, we have donated millions of meals to individuals facing hunger. We would not have been able to do that without our partners at Feeding America, the largest hunger relief organization in our country. Here’s a little taste of the work they do.

I also just wanted to remind everyone here to keep using the hashtag #BoxLunchHolidayGala. For every LIKE your posts get tonight using the hashtag, BoxLunch will donate one meal to Feeding America. You know I’d never ask you to do something I wouldn’t do myself, so here’s a look at my post…

[displays phone] Trisha and I did a post earlier tonight…

Not bad, right? Please join me in this easy way to help!

As you saw in the video, Feeding America is a network of local food banks and meal programs that help distribute meals to our neighbors in need. To celebrate people making a difference in their local communities, we’re now going to give out some special awards. Each recipient will be receiving a check for ten thousand dollars!

Earlier, we said hello to a few of the celebrity guests who are here to help spread the word about BoxLunch and Feeding America. Now, it’s my pleasure to bring to the stage this very funny actor, comedian, writer and producer. Not only has he appeared in amazing shows like VEEP and Ted Lasso, but he co-created and co-starred in the cult Comedy Central comedy series Detroiters! Here to give out the first award – it’s our friend Sam Richardson!

FOODBANK AWARD #1 PRESENTATION: SAM RICHARDSON

    SAM RICHARDSON

This first award goes to an incredible organization that’s been making a direct impact in the Los Angeles community for 50 years! It all started in 1972 with giving away donuts, coffee and distributing clothing to people in need. Today, this organization not only provides warm, nutritious meals and sack lunches through its Pantry Service, but also has programs to educate and empower local community members to help break the cycle of poverty. This includes distributing hygiene kits during breakfast hours, in-house showers several days a week, laundry services, and games and art activities.

BoxLunch HQ employees have partnered with this organization since 2016 - almost every year since they first opened! In addition to food, they have donated clothes, school supplies, hygiene and infant care goods such as diapers.

BoxLunch HQ employees have also volunteered here during the holidays, helping to fulfill families’ wish lists and providing necessities that will help them to have a festive holiday.

To celebrate the longevity and dedication of this organization, BoxLunch is honored to present the Community Commitment Award and a check for $10,000 to St. Francis Center!

Here to accept is Danielle Rayner!

Our next presenter always manages to win viewers’ hearts, whether she’s playing an ancient demon-turned-human on Buffy the Vampire Slayer or queen bee Mom “Dottie Jones” on WandaVision. She got her start on Beverly Hills 90210 and we’re so glad she’s joining us here tonight “in the 90015” to present our second award. Please put your hands together for Emma Caulfield Ford.

FOODBANK AWARD #2 PRESENTATION: EMMA CAULFIELD FORD

    EMMA CAULFIELD FORD

The second award tonight goes to a food bank with an incredible reach. Serving over 800,000 people a month and distributing nearly 3 million pounds of food on a weekly basis, this Los Angeles food bank not only helps the second largest city in the country, but the county surrounding it, too. They have programs for children, seniors and families, and some of the most influential chefs in LA have given of their time and resources to help the program through the food bank’s Chef’s Circle.

With a new branch right next to BoxLunch HQ, we can’t wait to see how much this partnership can help our local community. We can help tonight by making a $10,000 donation to tonight’s winner of the Community Impact Award — The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank!!

Here to accept is CEO Michael Flood.

This next award goes to a food bank that has a vast and diverse network to help provide dignified, equitable and consistent access to nutritious food for community members in need. This network includes houses of worship, school and college pantries, afterschool programs, Permanent School Pantries, senior centers, transitional housing facilities, soup kitchens, and shelters for the unhoused. They are a model example of how Feeding America’s food banks work - stitching together a wide array of groups and individuals to form a web of care and compassion.

I’m proud to present The Community Outreach Award to Second Harvest Food Bank Orange County! And of course we would not want you to feel left out, so you, too will receive a donation from BoxLunch for $10,000!

    TRISHA

It’s so amazing to see the people and organizations who are always focused on others get some love!!! Let’s keep the spirit going!

To spread awareness and drive even more meal donations to help people in need this season, BoxLunch has created a new title: the BoxLunch Giving Ambassador. We decided we needed someone to help spread the word about the work we do for our neighbors who may need it. Someone who was up for using their platform for good!! Because you know what they say about what comes with great power…

To introduce the first BoxLunch Giving Ambassador, I’d like to bring up someone who doesn’t think there’s anything STRANGE about lending a helping hand. Please give it up for actress Xochitl [“So-chee”] Gomez!

GIVING AMBASSADOR PRESENTATION: XOCHITL GOMEZ [1:30]

    XOCHITL GOMEZ

Hi everyone! I’m so happy to be here to introduce the very first BoxLunch Giving Ambassador. He’s an inspiration to many across the world, with a huge heart and a smile that lights up a room.

While he certainly knows how to defeat a villain onscreen, when it comes to combating bad situations in real life, he doesn’t pull any punches. He’s clear about the need for BoxLunch’s mission to help end hunger in America, and is willing to take action to do so!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is pretty big…but I’m really glad that tonight, I get to be here in this universe with all of you, and see this performer go from on-screen hero to real life hero. He’s a perfect fit for the BoxLunch mantra of Fandom, Philanthropy, & Fun! Please give a warm welcome to the first BoxLunch Giving Ambassador: actor and author Simu Liu!!

[GFX: Giving Ambassador graphic w/ Simu images from shoot]

GIVING AMBASSADOR REMARKS: SIMU LIU [3:00]

    SIMU LIU

    [quick reaction to Xochitl]

Hi everyone, it is an honor to be the first BoxLunch Giving ambassador. Since its inception, BoxLunch has had philanthropy at the core of its identity - it was actually created with the specific goal of giving back to local communities through its partnership with Feeding America. That’s WHY it’s called BoxLunch!

Now, I have to make a confession…based on its name, at first, I thought BoxLunch was a sandwich shop. But I quickly found out that it was a place that could help feed more than just me!

BoxLunch has an impact on people across the entire United States through the donations each retail store makes to its local community, and its donations to Feeding America’s nationwide efforts. And now I am thrilled to be a part of that.

We’ve partnered for an in-store campaign, where images of me will be appearing in BoxLunch windows to help drive direct change across the country. Our goal is to inspire people to get involved in their own communities through volunteering, donating, or any other way they can help do their part in this work. With our ongoing in-store and social campaign, we hope to highlight the importance and strength of a community that gives back.

Now, some might think that I’m getting involved with BoxLunch just because they have some pretty sweet Shang-Chi merchandise – and while that IS true – the real reason is because I have a personal connection to their mission. The pandemic adversely affected communities of color and families of color. I saw and felt that within circles of people my parents knew, and witnessed just how difficult things have been over the last couple of years. I’m very aware of and grateful for how lucky I’ve been, and it means a lot to me to be able to stay grounded and have the support of BoxLunch and Feeding America to help keep in mind what’s truly important - taking care of one another. I am excited to see what we can accomplish together!

And speaking of accomplishments, I’d like to announce—as my first act as the BoxLunch Giving Ambassador-- an exciting milestone. BoxLunch has officially donated over 150 million meals to Feeding America to help our neighbors in need across America!

At this time, I’d like to bring up Casey Marsh – the Chief Development Officer for Feeding America.

We’d like to present Feeding America with this check for $100,000, in celebration of over 150 million meals donated.

FEEDING AMERICA REMARKS: CASEY MARSH [2:00]

    TK - FROM CASEY MARSH

Thank you Simu [SEE-moo], and thank you so much to BoxLunch for your deep and meaningful partnership. The additional generous donation will help provide 1 million meals to our neighbors in need across the country!

The milestone of helping to provide 150 million meals is an incredible accomplishment and I know countless people here tonight have played a part in that. Your passion and your commitment to give back has truly paid off.

The kind of consistent and reliable support that Feeding America and local food banks receive from BoxLunch is critical to the work we do. We have all seen the headlines. We know that there were tens of millions of people facing hunger before the pandemic and that is still true today. Skyrocketing food and fuel prices and supply chain disruptions are affecting food banks and household budgets for millions of families are tightening, and we need everyone, private and public sectors, individuals and foundations, to play a part in responding.

I want to give a shout out to our food bank and agency partners who were recognized this evening. They are doing incredible work on the ground to help meet the need in their communities. I also want to thank the BoxLunch influencers in the room and around the country who have taken up our cause as their own. The awareness and funds you help raise is so important to the work that we do. It may not feel like one person on their own can do much, but we know that together, we are Feeding America. Thanks again everyone and have a great night!

BL Perspectives

  • BL Perspectives is a panel discussion series that is a part of our Diversity and Inclusion work at BoxLunch. The below example was for our Black History Month Program. I wrote out our host’s lines with room for expansion or improvisation and let the guests speak freely. Expand below for the script. Below that is the final video.

  • Introduction:

Welcome to BL Perspectives presented by BoxLunch, I’m your host Albert Lawrence, and today we’re celebrating Black History Month. We’ll be diving into the past, present and future of black pop culture, and covering everything from Coming 2 America to Black Panther, so you’re not going to want to miss it! Let’s get to know our panelists…

Wilson Morales, Editor & Writer, blackfilmandtv.com

Carla Renata, Film Journalist/Host, The Curvy Film Critic

Elijah Berry aka @Goodbye_Eli and cosplay extraordinaire

Thank you all for hanging out with us and bringing your perspective.

Section 1 - Current Black Pop Culture Moments:

So, before we explore the foundations of black pop culture, let’s start with the here and now – in terms black storytelling, representation and creators, what current pop culture moments do you think are worth celebrating?

What aspects of those pieces were you most excited for people to see?

What’s getting you excited to be a part of the black creative community?

This past fall, in the Zoom Where It Happens series, there was a live reimagining of Friends & Golden Girls with an all-black cast. Are there any other shows you’d like to see reimagined with an all-black cast?

Any shows already featuring majority black casts that audiences should be more aware of?

We’re starting to see more diverse casting choices in previously unexpected places, like Netflix’s hit show Bridgerton and the upcoming live action The Little Mermaid – what does seeing these more diverse casting options mean for black audiences?

Section 2 - Legacy and what inspires you:

Pieces like Bridgerton and Soul have been enjoying massive success. We also saw the cultural phenomenon that was the success of Black Panther in 2018. Let's now pay homage to what came before. What are some past pieces of Black storytelling—movies, shows, characters, etc.—that really set the stage for the success of these contemporary triumphs?

What impact did these pieces have on the Black community? What impact did they have on the wider creative community?

How have these groundbreaking works inspired your own creativity?

Circling back to Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman had, and continues to have, an incredible impact on the Black community, which was really brought to the attention of the wider public in the wake of his unfortunate passing. Why are figures like Chadwick and the characters he played—including T’challa, Jackie Robinson, James Brown, and Thurgood Marshall—important for contemporary audiences to see?

Boseman, along with people like Issa Rae and Jordan Peele have carved a unique and exciting space for Black people in contemporary storytelling—they have also presented a sense of ownership over the stories being told. So, let’s take it way back - when was the first time you felt a sense of Black agency/ownership in storytelling? When does black storytelling begin for you?

Speaking to Black creativity, are there any other contributors that merit some celebration? Maybe people who were behind the camera or had a less glamour role is promoting black storytelling.

Section 3 - Looking into the Future:

We’ve talked about how the past has paved the way for the present. How are current projects paving the way for the future of black stories in pop culture? What would you like that future to look like?

What are some things happening now that you’d like to see continue on into the future of Black pop culture?

What projects/black creators are you looking forward to seeing succeed?

In what ways are you hoping these specific projects/creators impact the future?

Well, we’ve talked about the present, we’ve talked about the past, and we’ve talked about the future of Black storytelling in pop culture. We’ve done a lot of talking, now it’s time to watch. Let’s put together a Black History Watch List for viewers to enjoy. What are your picks (2-3) for TV, Movies, or other pieces of pop culture media for those looking to celebrate Black History?

    Wrap Up:

Thank you all for your picks and for joining us for this celebratory Black History Month episode of BL Perspectives. For resources and more info on how you at home can celebrate Black History Month, see the links in the description below. I’m your host, Albert, and on behalf of myself, our guests, and BoxLunch, thanks to all of you for joining us as we celebrate Black stories in pop culture. See you next time!

Valentine’s Day Campaign Video

  • Expand below for the treatment I wrote for our video team, when we were tasked with showcasing our Valentine’s Day collection without the use of models. Below that is the final video.

  • Log line: Our Tees are trying to find their matching puzzle piece before time runs out—will they all succeed?

Puzzle pieces, representing our assortment of couples’ tees, are milling about on a plain-colored background—framed as if looking down on a puzzle on a table from above—their personality coming through with each motion they make. The playful set of pieces is startled by a buzzer (or horn or whatever), and they frantically rush to find their matching piece. They bump into and off each other in a mad dash to connect with their predestined counterparts—the aim is to become a complete shape. As the first couple pieces connect with their counterparts and settle into place, the remaining pieces rush to each other.

All of the pieces settle in to place, locked together with their partner, some dancing in place with excitement, others seemingly celebrating, with their neighbors, that they are able to form the outline of a heart. But wait. There is still one spot of the outlined heart waiting to be filled. A timid looking piece hovers in the corner, its partner in the opposite corner, the heart between them. They are not sure how to reach each other. The two pieces closest to the timid piece separate, clearing the way. It rushes across to meet its waiting partner. They click together and settle into place, revealing the fully formed heart.

April Fool’s Prank

  • The idea for this April Fool’s prank was original a hidden camera concept where we would introduce our new mascot, Boxy, to people and capture their reactions. The concept evolved into a mockumentary-style video, complete with a post-credit scene. Unfortunately, the week this was going to film was the same week work-from-home was instated at the beginning of the pandemic, so it was never completed. Expand below for script.
